Hoi An Lantern Festival 2023
The old town of Wernigerode illuminated by the light of hundreds of handmade lanterns.
The upcoming lantern festival is the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the twinship between the cities of Wernigerode in Germany and Hoi An in Vietnam. During the festival from 25th to 27th August 2023 the old town of Wernigerode will be illuminated by the light of hundreds of handmade lanterns from Vietnam. Craftsmen and traders from Hoi An will show their work of authentic Vietnamese craftsmanship at the “Marktplatz” of Wernigerode. Apart from that, all visitors and guests can enjoy traditional meals and snacks from Southeast Asia as well a very stunning stage program. This includes performances of musicians, dancers, artists and of a Tai-Chi Master from Hanoi. Special highlights of the festival will also be vegetable carving workshops, the photo exhibition “Mein Hoi An” (my Hoi An) or city short trips by bicycle rickshaw which still is a typical way of transport in Hoi An and other Southeast Asian cities.
Since August 2013 the Vietnamese harbor city of Hoi An has been a twin city of Wernigerode. The city with today 75,000 inhabitants is located along the coast of the South China Sea in Central Vietnam about 30 kilometers south of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province. Hoi An used to be the largest harbor in South East Asia. The old city of Hoi An is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
