Quang Dong Assembly Hall History

In the past, from the 15th century to the 19th century, Hoi An ancient town was very busy with an international trading port, which attracted many Chinese people to trade and live. The Assembly Hall was built in the 1885s of the 18th century by a Chinese merchant. Originally to worship Confucius and the Heavenly Lady, after 1911, it was converted to worship Tien Hien and Quan Cong.

The Assembly Hall was built in the 1885s of the 18th century by a Chinese merchant. Originally to worship Confucius and the Heavenly Lady, after 1911, it was converted to worship Tien Hien and Quan Cong.

The complex of Quang Dong Assembly hall is built in a closed manner in the shape of the word “national” on the high and wide ground. It is including a three-way gate, a garden with many ornamental plants, a communal house, the east and west sides houses, the main hall, and the backyard.

Three-door gate: Just entering the gate, visitors will admire 3 large paintings of 3 famous mandarins of the Three Kingdoms period, namely Luu Bi, Truong Phi, and Quan Cong.

The front hall: On a large scale, this place consists of stone walls that are intricately carved. The roof with many layers is shaped high and interspersed with embossed figures bearing ancient legends.

The campus: Including a large garden, with many ornamental plants that are meticulously cared for and trimmed. In the middle of the yard, there is a large lake, inside is the image of a winding dragon carved based on the legend “Carp turned dragon”.

Main hall: With a large space, characterized by large supporting pillars divided into 3 compartments: the middle one worships Quan Cong, and the other two sides worship good-fortune god and richness god.

Right- Left halls: connected to the main hall, for contract signing and important meetings.

Backstage area: The backyard of the clubhouse is very spacious with green trees. The highlight is the intricately carved dragon-shaped fountain and the large-sized Quan Cong picture.

Valuable Antiquities

At present, the Cantonese Assembly Hall still retains ancient antiquity with high value such as four large horizontal paintings, a pair of Chinese porcelain pedestals, a bronze urn up to 1.6 meters high, etc.

There is a painting of Quan Cong riding a horse to protect Liu Bei’s wife, which is solemnly hung on the stone wall at the assembly hall. According to the explanation of the Cantonese Assembly Hall, this painting is associated with a true historical story in China.

Cantonese Assembly Hall Festivals

In the first lunar month of every year, at the assembly hall, the Nguyen Tieu festival will be held to pray for a year of favorable rain and wind, favorable business, and meeting fellow countrymen.
