Hội An Ancient Town is a living relic complex, a place of residence, trade, and creation on the basis of the original resident community's selection and acculturation with people from other places who came here to live and trade in previous centuries. Hội An Ancient Town is a prominent expression of creativity and unmatched values in history, culture, architecture, folk art, traditional occupations, customs, and people.
The ancient architecture of tubular houses, yin and yang tile roofs, unique architectural - artistic decoration, door eyes... of the "living relics, living museums" in the center of the city create the most typical and unique values for Hội An. As a result, Hội An has been honored by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
Hội An is also a place where many unique intangible cultural values are preserved, most notably the art of Bài Chòi, which has been designated as the Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
It can be said that it is rare to find a place with such a dense concentration of relics as Hội An, which has a complex of artistic architecture belonging to civil works (houses, bridges, wells, markets), religious works (communal houses, pagodas, mausoleums - temples, assembly halls, family chapels), and specific works (graves). Each architectural style has its own characteristics and nuances, but it is a harmonious combination of space, layout and ingenious blend of Vietnamese - Chinese - Japanese - Western architectural styles.
The pagodas' curved roofs are flexible, the walls are staggered, the yin and yang roofs are undulating, the roof slopes are gentle, the alleys are dark and mossy, the door eyes are mysterious, the carved patterns are superb,…
Generations of the Hội An community have created a typical structure of "village in town - town in village". Urban forms are always integrated and intertwined within the ecological landscape system, creating a typical ecological model "town in garden - garden in town" for Hội An.
This is an advantage in terms of landscape and ecological environment to guide future development in order to build an urban identity while preserving Hội An's biodiversity values.
